Ted--I share your sentiments! For weeks after reading A Story of a Life, I found it hard to find a book I could get into because everything paled in comparison. I don't know the secret to getting others to pick up such a wonderful book, though, any more than I do for any other title on this site. But at least I can put this page online and hope that the occasional traveller down the information superhighway takes the wrong exit, finds out about the book, and heads off to the nearest bookstore for a copy.

I have just finished A Story of A Life (3 volumes). The comments above are all on target. Now how can I persuade others to read it? If you have a choice between reading *Doctor Zhivago* (though itself a great novel) and this, read this. If you have a choice between reading this and *War and Peace*, read both. Somewhere right now Paustovsky is introducing vodka to Twain, Hemingway, and Dickens, as they share what they know about *real* style.
